Custom vs. Customized Cabinetry
When choosing cabinetry, it is the biggest decision that you will face. Do you go with custom cabinetry, or customized cabinetry? Obviously we believe that you should always go with custom cabinetry. That is pretty much a given. But why? There are reasons to go with both. If you are on a tight budget, choosing pre-made, or customized might be the way to go (although the price of customized is quickly approaching custom). You should always consider getting an estimate on your kitchen design from a custom make as well. Your local maker may be able to work within your budget to give you a superior handcrafted project. Below we will outline a few points to hopefully help you make your decision.
When redoing your kitchen, or any room for that matter, you will want to have a finalized design before you order anything. When dealing with a custom shop, you should make sure that they have a dedicated design person on staff. Back and forth communication is very important when it comes to getting the design that you want. Having images and ideas will help that process go faster, and get the results you are looking for. While customized cabinet manufacturers have design platforms you can use, you will be limited on some aspect. Saw a picture on Pinterest or Houzz and want it replicated, try getting that made with a pick and choose catalog. We had a client come to us because she wanted a desk area with inset chicken wire side doors. Things like that you will only get with a custom maker.
Total Creative Control
Sometimes rooms are not square, have difficult ceiling lines, or challenging spaces. You can optimize these areas with space saving remedies. Most of the time, if you go with customized, you will end up with a soffit put in by the installer to meet the cabinets. This will effectively negate areas that could be used for more cabinetry and storage. With custom you can go all the way to the ceiling with your cabinets, and utilize the the available space in your room.
